A Corner of The Universe by Ann M. Martin

This book is about Adam having mental illness problems.  His school closes, so he goes to visit his niece, Hattie, for the summer.  Adam does not want to be proper, much like Hattie, so they quickly become friends.  Adam does some crazy things.  Hattie is not very ladylike, but her grandmother wants her to be a proper lady.  You should read this book if you like sad stories.
